What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of Chinese medicine that has been practised, refined and researched for over 2,000 years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points in the body to trigger the body’s own healing mechanism.
It can be used effectively and safely alongside conventional medicine.
What can it do for me?
People from all walks of life – men and women, old and young – come for acupuncture, and for all sorts of reasons. Acupuncture can benefit a wide range of health issues, as diverse as anxiety, insomnia, digestive difficulties, migraine, lower back pain, hay fever, menstrual problems and fibromyalgia.
As it is holistic in nature, meaning that it treats the ‘whole’ rather than the ‘part’, patients also find they feel better generally and have more energy as a result of treatment.
Will it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are as fine as a human hair and nothing like the needles used to administer vaccinations or take blood. Patients often report a ‘tingling’, ‘pulling’ or mild aching sensation.
Is it safe?
The needles used are sterile, single-use and disposable.
What does treatment involve?
The practitioner will use a number of different methods to get a complete picture of your health and lifestyle – taking a medical history, reading your pulses and looking at your tongue. A treatment plan is then created and acupuncture points selected according to your specific needs.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on your individual condition. Treatments are initially weekly, and a change is usually felt within five to six treatments, though fewer may be sufficient. Some people choose to have regular acupuncture thereafter, usually monthly, to maintain good health and vitality.
